The world of fine spirits is often clouded by folklore well-intentioned advice passed down through generations until it hardens into accepted fact. Opinions are frequently presented as expertise, and misconceptions are repeated until they gain the weight of truth.
At Stanley & Gray, we believe true appreciation begins when we strip away these conventions. Here are five common misconceptions and the truth behind each one.
- All Whisky Is Smoky
Myth: If it’s whisky, it must possess the heavy, campfire-smoke profile of peat.
Truth: Peat is an ingredient, not a definition. While peat-derived decay adds distinct smoke and earthiness, it is merely one avenue of expression. Many of the world’s most distinguished whiskies are defined by notes of honey, orchard fruit, and vanilla. If you have sampled a peated expression and found it abrasive, you haven’t yet encountered the vast, diverse landscape of the category. There is a bottle for every palate, you simply haven’t found yours.
- Cognac Is Only for Special Occasions
Myth: Cognac is a trophy spirit reserved exclusively for milestones, weddings, anniversaries, and toasts.
Truth: Cognac is a spirit of immense versatility. It is a masterpiece when served neat, but it also serves as the structural backbone for history’s most refined cocktails, the Sidecar, the French 75, and the Cognac Old Fashioned. Cognac doesn’t wait for an occasion, it creates one.
- White Rum Is Lower Quality Than Dark Rum
Myth: Dark rum signifies ageing and quality, while white rum is relegated to the bottom shelf.
Truth: Hue is a byproduct of production, not a metric of quality. A pristine white rum can possess as much nuance and pedigree as an aged, dark counterpart. In many cases, white rums are aged and then carefully filtered to remove colour, or distilled to emphasize a crisp, clean profile. True quality is found in the craft, not the pigment. Judge the spirit by what is in the glass, not the light reflecting off it.
- Gin Is Just Flavoured Vodka
Myth: Gin is simply vodka infused with juniper.
Truth: Gin is a spirit of design, whereas vodka is a spirit of neutrality. While vodka is distilled to remove character and achieve purity, gin is intentionally built upon a foundation of botanicals, coriander, angelica root, citrus, and by legal definition, juniper. Every distillery operates with a distinct recipe and philosophy. If you believe you dislike gin, you may simply dislike the heavy-handedness of one specific style. Explore the category further, the diversity is profound.
- Older Always Means Better
Myth: A higher age statement automatically equates to a superior spirit.
Truth: Time is merely one ingredient in a much larger equation. While maturation adds complexity, it cannot mask the flaws of poor distillation. A thoughtfully crafted young spirit will always outperform a poorly made, aged one. Do not succumb to the allure of the number on the label. Invest in the character of the liquid inside.
The Stanley & Gray Standard
True refinement comes from experience, not hearsay. The world of spirits is wider, deeper, and more welcoming than these myths suggest. We invite you to explore the Stanley & Gray collection, where quality is measured by character, not convention.
Trust your palate. Let the myths remain in the past.
